Stealth iPhone Price Cut

Apple announced today that they are offering “used” “refurbished” iPhones for sale on their website at $100 off a perfectly new model. Do you not find this a bit odd? They won’t say how many are available - I certainly hope it’s not close the 1,000,000 500,000 270,000 they sold in the first weekend because then we might wonder about product quality issues. Where is this inventory coming from? It’s just a little confusing because I haven’t heard the iPhanatics discussing returns in their worship reviews. Maybe this explains the difference between AT&T’s iPhone activations of 146,000 vs. the 270,000 that were sold by AAPL. For the hottest most-hyped consumer electronic product in recent history to do this two months after the first sale is not normal. Often times, a company just eats these or donates them to maintain the prestige pricing strategy. If the demand for iPhones is as large as yesterday’s well-timed hyping from UBS proclaimed, then this $100 off sale should cause you to pause.  It certainly looks like a stealth price cut to me.  I wonder if the UBS analyst was including refurbished resales in his unit sales estimate.
