From time to time I put out a list of stocks that I think will have a high beta over the short term - as in days. However, these are not day trading bets - as you know, I don’t advocate intraday trades or intraweek trades. Whenever I do these lists, all of the stocks are UP signals and have been UP signals for weeks. Usually, these are the signals that I have been early wrong on and finally look like they are going to head higher. And if that happens, I am hoping that it is just the beginning of a longer term move. When I mentioned “high beta” in the first sentence, I meant it. My past experience with these lists are that they often do move dramatically - IN BOTH DIRECTIONS. Remember that high betas are a double-edged sword and these are the ones where I am optimistic about the direction but realistic about the dangerous volatility. So it’s critical when looking at stocks like this that investors use tight stops and other risk management techniques to avoid big/rapid moves against your position. Without a doubt, I expect that very few of the following symbols will move in lock step with the market change in the next week. A week from now, I’ll analyze them and put up a statistical summary to show the distribution of 1-week returns vs. the market return.
